Boulder teens earn Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting

This spring, teens from Boulder are receiving the Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting. Anneliese Meta Bruening, Annie Szczurek Davis and Elizabeth Stuber have demonstrated exceptional commitment to taking action to make the world a better place through their community service. The accomplishments of Gold Award recipients reflect extraordinary leadership and citizenship skills that mark them as valuable contributors to their communities and world.

"Earning the Girl Scout Gold Award designation is truly a remarkable achievement, and these young women exemplify leadership in all its forms," said Stephanie Foote, Chief Executive Officer of Girl Scouts of Colorado. "They saw a need and took ownership of helping to develop a solution and took action to make it happen. Their extraordinary dedication, perseverance and leadership is making the world a better place."

Clothe Your Baby

“I love sewing, and I combined that love with helping those in need in my community for my Gold Award. I sewed clothing for underprivileged children in my community (through Parenting Place) as well as in Poland (through SOS Children’s Villages). I didn’t act alone in the venture. I reached out to family, friends and other area Girl Scouts to help me. I organized many sewing parties, where novice and expert sewers helped me. There were many challenges to overcome in following patterns and finishing the clothing items. But, in the end, we created 38 outfits for these organizations. I used Facebook to organize my parties and share information about my final products. I am proud to have helped families in need.”

Elders and Youth Working Towards a Greater Cause

“Through my Gold Award, I worked to address the issue that elderly people, even those in nursing homes, can be isolated and lonely. I created a program where over the course of several months, 27 5th graders from Boulder Community School of Integrated Studies came to Boulder Manor, a local nursing home, and got to know the residents by participating in discussions and activities with them. Feedback from the program showed it made a difference. One Boulder Manor resident said “it made me feel great and I loved getting to know the kids.” At the end of my project I created a guide for the school and nursing home as well as posted it online to encourage programs like this to continue in the future.”

Accessible Gardens

“My grandmother inspired me for my Gold Award project. When my grandmother was in an assisted living facility, I felt it would have benefited her to have something to care for, like a garden. So I decided to put together gardens at Sunrise, an assisted living facility in my area. I spent 60+ hours on this project. My family and friends helped me. I constructed the gardens in such a way that even those in wheelchairs can enjoy them and help care for them. At the completion of my project the gardens were introduced to the residents, and activities have been created at the facility for the residents to help care for it for years to come. Through this project I grew as a leader.”

The Gold Award culminates with a project led by one young woman between 9th and 12th grades who builds a purpose-based team to work with the larger community to meet a need. The focus of a Girl Scouts’ Gold Award project is identifying and researching a community issue she is passionate about, developing a plan to address it in cooperation with her team and community members, establishing a global connection with others and providing sustainability for the project. Of the skills learned through Girl Scouts’ Highest Awards, leadership, organization and critical thinking are the fundamentals of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. The Gold Award has been part of the Girl Scout program since 1916. Some universities and colleges offer scholarships unique to Gold Award recipients, and girls who enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces may receive advanced rank in recognition of their achievements.

Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. We provide a safe place for girls to explore their world – from science, technology and the environment to healthy living, anti-bullying and financial literacy. For more than 100 years, Girl Scouting has been helping each girl develop her personal leadership skills and make friends that last a lifetime. Girl Scouts is also a great place to enhance job skills and give back to your community as an adult volunteer. In fact, we serve 31,000 girl members and 10,000 adult volunteers across Colorado! New to Girl Scouts are the flexible pathways for participation for both girls and adult volunteers.
