what time of day did you see this? And what settings did you use? I shoot with a Nikon DSLR and the largest lens I have is 55-300mm. So any tips I would love.

This was mid to late afternoon. Camera was preset on fast shutter speed. This was not a long, long lens -- 18-135 zoom. But this guy came in really close. I think he was zeroing in on a dead little critter in the field next to the trail.

was this near the parking area as you are going toward Coot Lake? Also thanks for the info. I am getting into photography and I was just looking for some setting help as I am trying to work on my areal photography.

No this was over near that ranch on the west side of Eagle Trail. But big birds can turn up anywhere along that trail. The main thing is to be ready when they turn up, because you won;' have time to fiddle with camera settings as they fly by.
