Helping Hands Club (HHC), middle schoolers with a passion for community service, at Dawson School in Lafayette has won the distinction of Top Youth Fundraising Team at the 2014 East Boulder County Relay for Life, benefitting the American Cancer Society. The event, an overnight relay, was held from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Saturday-Sunday, Aug. 2 and 3, at Waneka Lake in Lafayette. Thirty-six Dawson School students raised over $2,700.

The Dawson club’s team of students, teachers, and family members, was the largest at the event. Twenty-seven members led the parade and then participated in the relay, including 15 who relayed through the night.

This is the third year of HHC’s participation in the relay, and their first to obtain the “Bronze Team” level based on fundraising dollars. Funds were raised last spring on the school campus; in addition, students took on outside activities to contribute, such as selling luminarias. Dawson family-owned Two Moms in the Raw and High Country Harley-Davidson donated products to be sold at the relay or offered in a silent auction, and families provided other items to sell, as well.

“These kids are amazing,” raved HHC coordinator RuthAnne Schedler, a sixth grade teacher at Dawson School “(Rising eighth grader]) Noah Williams won the event’s Fun Run, and went on to run a half marathon to support the fight against cancer, but he is just one of many stories here today. I never cease to be excited by all the ways our kids go above and beyond to try and make a difference in the world. They recognize that many small acts can make a big difference.”

Dawson School’s Helping Hands Club is comprised of over 50 middle school students who meet weekly to make a difference in their community. In 2013-14, the group provided more than 2,500 volunteer hours, hosted campus events, and collected financial and in-kind donations which benefitted numerous organizations including The American Cancer Society, The Longmont Humane Society, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Stink Bug Projects, and Community Food Share.
